“Most of us spent the first quarter of our lives in hiding and have no intention of going back there for the last.”

When the founders of Barbary Lane Communities asked if
they could use the name of my imaginary street, I found
lots of reasons to say yes. For one thing, I’m an
old guy myself, so I’ve done a little thinking about
what retirement will mean to me. So the question arises:
will we eventually be forced to submit to the old institutions,
draining the color and freedom from our lives? Or will we
somehow continue to reinvent the world with flags proudly
flying?
That’s what excites me about this bold new community
on Lake Merritt. That elegant old building is a stunner,
to be sure, but its true beauty lies in its intention. Like
the apartment house at 28 Barbary Lane in "Tales of
the City," it's a place where every everyone can live
life to the fullest and love without boundaries. That’s
very good news for all of us.
